‘Supernatural’ season 9, episode 19 review: Did Jody Mills survive ‘Alex Annie Alexis Ann’?
Typically when there are “Supernatural” episodes that revolve mostly around a supporting character, we worry … especially when that supporting character is someone who has only made a handful of other appearances recently.
We have to admit that the moment we realized that “Alex Annie Alexis Anne” was going to be a story for Jody Mills, we were immediately terrified that she wasn’t going to make it. Female characters on this show, save for maybe her and Charlie, do not have a good habit of living for very long. We didn’t want that for her! Kim Rhodes is a great part of the cast, and she’s almost an extension of the Winchester family at this point. So about forty minutes in when it looked like the show’s gnarly, non-sparkly vampires were going to destroy her, we were afraid.
This was actually a pretty violent “Supernatural” even be their standards. Jody did live, but there was a ton of violence, beheadings, and blood. There were also tear-jerkers in the final minute, where Jody realized that if she wanted to really move forward, she needed to find a better way to channel and handle her own grief. Ending the episode with her rather than Sam or Dean was a nice touch as she started to rediscover family. The truth here is that the guys are going to have more opportunities to tell their stories this year, and she probably won’t. It was okay to let her have this one, and this ending made us only want to root for more and more of Jody the rest of the season.
Maybe we went into this episode with lower expectations with it being a standalone story, but this is actually one of our favorites in a while. There wasn’t much humor, but the emotion here was enough to keep us engaged from start to finish. Grade: B+.
