NBC’s ‘Community’ season 5 trailer: Joel McHale’s Jeff Singer is in entirely new place
Back when we heard that “Community” was returning for a fifth season, there was of course an important question that came along with it: How on earth do you tell the story now? You are no longer looking at a guy in Jeff Winger who is a student at Greendale Community College, and so in order for the show to work, the writers have to get creative when it comes to figuring out a way to get him back there.
As it turns out, they will be doing so with him as a teacher of all things. The trailer below for the new season shows Jeff in a very different place than he was at the end of season 4. He seems to be back on the prowl now at the university mostly because he ran out of money trying to practice law using some sort of cheating TV persona to drum up attention for himself. Therefore, teaching at Greendale (the place where unsuccessful people go to thrive) seemed to be the best option.
Granted, the question that now pops up is just how much time has really passed in general between the end of last season and the start of this one. Abed, Troy, and Annie all make appearances in the trailer, so we can probably assume that they are all still students there. But even after graduation, the show may have figured out an interesting way to make the show survive by having all of the main characters find some sort of jobs still working for the community college.
While Abed worries us with the comparison to the ninth season of “Scrubs” (which we personally like to believe never happened at all), we have faith in Dan Harmon returning to run this rebooted version of the show. You’ve got much of the old creative team back, and most of the cast to go along with it. Donald Glover won’t be gone until after the fifth episode, so you should also have a good chunk of Troy, as well.
