‘Boardwalk Empire’ season 4 finale spoilers: Will Nucky Thompson survive his latest crisis?

Almost all “Boardwalk Empire” finales seem to have a common thread to them, at least in that there is something pretty horrible that happens, and at least a few characters (with Nucky Thompson being one of them) typically find themselves knocking on death’s door by the time the end comes. While we don’t quite imagine any of them being more shocking than what unfolded with Michael Pitt at the end of season 2, we at least have to give the show a little round of applause for at least trying.

So don’t be surprised that the season 4 finale manages to do a good job putting Nucky in the crosshairs yet again, though this time it could be Agent Knox who he really has to be afraid of … at least on the surfaces. There’s always still the potential for a few twists to come out of nowhere and send the show careening off into another direction.

“Eli braces for the worst as Agent Knox launches his plan to bring Nucky down. Capone and Torrio reach an agreement in Cicero. Chalky looks to settle scores. Richard (Jack Huston) steps forward to save Tommy (Brady Noon), at Gillian’s expense.”

Is this going to be the episode that a good many longtime fans of the show out there have been waiting for? If nothing else, we imagine that it’s going to at least help to continue to prove that this season has been greatly improved from season 3. But in order to keep that title, it still has to end the right way. While we don’t necessarily ascribe to the belief that it needs a big cliffhanger to leave your jaw on the floor, it should at least leave you anxious / surprised at what could be coming around the bend.
