‘Game of Thrones’ season 4 spoilers: ‘Blackwater’s’ Neil Marshall on what to expect

Game of Thrones -Is “Game of Thrones” season 4 going to contain even more shockers? In so many ways, the question feels like a rhetorical one, given that this is “Game of Thrones” that we are talking about here! This is a series that has over the years made a living out of finding ways to completely surprise you, and there is no reason to believe that they will not up the ante once again with the arrival of season 4 … which could be its bloodiest season yet in many ways. There are so many characters now, which only increases the capacity of people we can lose.

A guy who should know the inner workings of the show quite well now is Neil Marshall, known for directing one of the most significant episodes of the series in “Blackwater.” Speaking to Flicks in the City, he suggested (for those of you who are still so wonderfully unspoiled) that there could be another event like the Red Wedding that gets people up in arms:

“I wouldn’t doubt it [of there being a Red Wedding-like episode in Season 4]. I think that’s one of the key things of Game of Thrones, which is to take characters that you loved for three of four years and then butcher them brutally. Yeah, there’s a bit of drama and tragedy in my episode so I’m sure there is for the rest of the season as well.”

Marshall was of course just being coy, since he knows very well at this point just what sort of stunners there are ahead for “Game of Thrones” fans this coming season. He is directing both the ninth and the tenth episodes of season 4, which means that he will carry you through straight to the end of the season, and into that season 5 that is going to be especially tricky for the show. This is when you will suddenly be at that danger zone of starting to cross over into where George R.R. Martin is with the books, and there is no way for the show to progress ahead without him. (We’ll have more on that in the months ahead.)

For now, what we can tell you is that production on season 4 is wrapping in terms of filming, but there is still much work to be done in the editing room and with every other department in post-production. Season 4 will premiere on HBO in the spring.
