‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5, episode 2 review: Silas tries to ruin Damon and Elena

Take a look -At the end of last week’s new episode of “The Vampire Diaries,” we saw the first major shocker of the season as the end was here for none other than Bonnie Bennett’s father. Just to make matters worse for her, the fact that he was human without powers meant that he was also not floating around in the afterlife. That’s a sad thought going into “True Lies,” which is a strange name for tonight’s installment.

So was there any sort of silver lining for her this week? Not really. She’s still very much a ghost, and the only twist here is that someone else knows about her secret in Matt, thanks to a plan that ended up with Matt temporarily dead while sporting a very important ring that the Gilbert family is more than familiar with. This was definitely some instant devastation for him, especially when he learned that he was going to just forget everything in the first place. He told Bonnie that she has to tell Jeremy to let the secret out.

For many, the biggest moment of the episode has to be Silas trying to throw an emotional wrench into the Damon / Elena relationship by compelling her to lose her mind. Was it entertaining? Sure, and it was also a nice little way to inject more drama into the relationship before Elena in the end managed to escape, a sign of the strength that the two of them have. Elena learned in here that Stefan was in fact suffering, and she is now on a quest to save his hide. There is still a creepy professor to take care of, but that task has been handed to Caroline for the time being.

In the end, this was a strong episode and a sign that the show really is going in the right direction. The story is much simpler this year, and we’re happier with that. Somehow, they’ve managed to make Silas un-confusing! Hooray for that!
