‘Burn Notice’ series finale spoilers; Boss on possible happy ending for Michael, Fiona

Given everything that they have been through over the years, we understand the desire for many “Burn Notice” fans to see some sort of happy ending for Michael and Fiona at the end of next week’s series finale. We’re certainly with you in that regard. Earlier this season when she gave him that same embrace that we saw in a flashback sequence back from their early days together, there was a tiny, paranoid part of us that wondered whether or not that was going to be it for the twosome. Luckily, it wasn’t, and this brings us to where we are now.

While creator Matt Nix does not necessarily guarantee anything while speaking with TVLine on the subject of the couple’s future, you can still interpret from this that there will be a ray of light for the two characters when the gunfire finally stops:

“… Nothing has ever been easy for them, and I think it’s fitting that it’s not easy at the end. For me, it’s always been less about depicting a happy relationship than about showing two people who love each other very much and are struggling to find a way to reconcile that love with who they are. There will be a lot of worrying and fingernail biting … [but] I don’t think I’ll be getting hate mail from the romantics in the audience at the end of the day.”

This last episode, coupled with the first teaser for the final unveiled at the tail end of it, gives you plenty of reasons to be excited, but at the same time there is reason to be afraid. We know already that a major character is going to die before the story is over, and Michael and Fiona both have to be candidates given the situations that they put themselves in. Can they still have what you would consider a “happy ending” even if one of them dies? That is a question to ask yourself over the next six days.
