‘Breaking Bad’ season 5, episode 9 review: Hank digs deeper, Walt hides a secret

Breaking BadWe have been counting down the months, weeks and days until the “Breaking Bad” season 5 premiere and finally Sunday it happened. So did it live up to all of the hype?

We weren’t sure how Hank was going to handle his suspicions about Walt being Heisenberg. Was he going to go busting into the back yard and cuff Walt or bide his time? Hank’s a very smart cop (under all the jokes and light-hearted ribbing), so he took Walt’s “Leaves of Grass” book and went to work. After a week of scouring through old cases he finally put all of the pieces together that Walt was indeed the kingpin behind the drug operation. Although Hank may have wanted more time to put a case together before bringing it to the station, Walt figured out that Hank was onto him and confronted him. We expected this confrontation to happen later in the show, but with only 8 episodes this season they decided to throw us into the fire. Hank punched Walt in the face and threatened to expose him to everyone (not knowing that Skyler’s involved) and Walt returned the threat, telling him to be careful.

Walt said he was out of the business last season and he meant it, he hasn’t gone back, no matter who came to him asking for help. Really Walt has bigger problems in that his cancer is back, he has 6 months to live (if you believe the lies he told Hank) and he’s hiding it from his family.

Jesse is still dealing with everything that’s gone down and he’s not dealing with it very well. He feels that the $5 million he has is blood money and he doesn’t want anything to do with it, so when trying to give it away doesn’t work he starts driving around and randomly throwing bundles of cash on people’s lawns.

Over all it was a great premiere, the only thing we aren’t crazy about is the flash forwards, because they are set so far in the future it seems that our ending is mostly laid out for us. That Walt has cancer, he’s on the run (so Hank must’ve lost him at some point) and now he’s got the poison that he hid in his old house (that is now condemned). Is he planning on taking it and ending his life? Only 7 more episode to go to find out.
