Who is Red John on the “Mentalist”? This is something that has plagued fans of the CBS show for seemingly as long as the series has been around (a slight exaggeration, we know), and producers are still routinely teasing us with an answer. Given the show’s large audience, they seem to be in no hurry to come up with a succinct decision, but we can at least tell you that one more name will be written off the suspect list very soon.
According to TVLine, one of the following people; Gale Bertram, Ray Haffner, Bob Kirkland, Sheriff Thomas McAllister, Brett Partridge, Reede Smith, or Bret Stiles is going to be off the list of possibilities very early on this season. Who will it be? You’ll find out much more come September 29, when the show returns as a part of its familiar block containing “The Amazing Race” and “The Good Wife.”
One of the major challenges for “The Mentalist” is something that many other shows out there can really relate to: What do you do when one of your central mysteries is solved? For “Monk,” for example, it was about what happened to his wife, and for “Bones” right now, it’s about trying to take on the issue of Pelant’s wedding threat. If you are going to be tackling your “Big Bad” sort of character, you have to have some sort of plan to move forward without them and into something else exciting. If “The Mentalist” ever does move forward beyond Red John, let’s hope that they manage to figure this out.
