‘The Voice’ UK: Danny O’Donoghue slams season 1 winner Leanne Mitchell

The VoiceWell, you can’t say that Danny O’Donoghue is anything other than honest. On the same weekend that Leanne Mitchell made her return to “The Voice” UK for a performance, the front-man for The Script and one of the show’s popular coaches was quick to offer up an opinion as to why her debut album sold less than a thousand copies in its first week. Basically, he put much of the blame on her.

Speaking (per The Mirror) about her poor sales, Danny stood behind the show and the network. It’s a pretty shocking comment, mostly because it is not something that he really needed to say:

“That’s not my fault, that’s not the show’s fault, that’s not the BBC’s fault, that’s just her fault. You can take an artist like that and question their work ethic … I was told by Tom Jones, and by the label as well, that Leanne just did not want to work as hard as you have to work to be a popstar. She wanted to come on a show and win a singing contest. That’s good for her, because she won the show. But it’s not good for the premise of the show.”

Leanne clearly disagrees with these claims, as she tweeted a pretty harsh rebuttal (presumably about these comments):

“Hopefully you guys aren’t actually believing any of the bulls**t in the press anymore.. Trust me, it’s ALL LIES!!”

So who do we believe? We really don’t know. Danny clearly has a certain standard of where he thinks a person has to work to be successful, and he doesn’t believe that Leanne meets it. Meanwhile, Leanne of course thinks that she works hard and wants to be successful. We really think that her failure is mostly attributed to the label for a lack of promotion, but Leanne’s also not the kind of artist that is selling well at the moment. Even if there was more promotion behind it, this was sadly a situation that we saw coming a mile away.

What do you think about Danny’s comments: Do you agree with him? In case you missed the recent (and anemic) ratings for “The Voice” UK, you can check them out here.
