‘Downton Abbey’ season 4 debate: Are we fine with Michelle Dockery’s Mary being single?

MaryIf you will recall from a recent interview, Michelle Dockery said that for “Downton Abbey” season 4, Mary is going to do her best to carry with her that “keep calm and carry on” sort of British mentality. While she will be mourning her late husband Matthew dearly, she is also going to do her best to not let what transpired with the automobile accident do her in or cause her great stress and strife for the rest of her life.

When it comes to the subject of love, does that mean that she will move on this year? This has been a hot topic of debate for some time, and there’s really no reason at all to believe that this is suddenly going to simmer anytime soon. We already know that Tom Cullen has been cast as Lord Anthony Gillingham, and the character has been long described as a possible Mary love interest. But does this mean that the two are going to be getting together at any point this year? Well, the answer to that is “not necessarily.” We don’t know what the trajectory is here for the two; for example, they could start to think about a relationship at the end of this season, and then jump forward to the next.

One of the issues in giving Mary someone new to date a little bit sooner is simply running the risk of angering so many of the character’s devoted fans. We know already that there are people who love Mary and cherish her deeply. Therefore, the last thing that you want to do is make them feel like she’s moving on too fast. We understand that time passes much faster in the “Downton Abbey” world, but that is not necessarily how that works for viewers.

What’s your take on this issue: Would you be happier if Mary was single for the entirety of “Downton Abbey” season 4 before moving on with her personal life? Be sure to vote in the poll below!
