2013 Critics’ Choice TV Awards: Can ‘Orphan Black’ stop ‘Homeland,’ Claire Danes?

Critics ChoiceFor our next edition for our Critics’ Choice TV Awards series, we’re really focusing on a category that many may have already pegged as one of the most predictable out of all of them. However, this is also one that we are prepared to pick one of the biggest upsets for of the year.

Want to know who we think will take home the drama lead actress prize? Read on to find out! Also, we have a poll below for you to share your picks, and there is a full treasure trove of prediction stories about this June 10 show over at the link here.

The nominees – Claire Danes, “Homeland” (Showtime), Vera Farmiga, “Bates Motel” (A&E), Julianna Margulies, “The Good Wife” (CBS), Tatiana Maslany, “Orphan Black” (BBC America), Elisabeth Moss, “Mad Men” (AMC), Keri Russell, “The Americans” (FX)

The surprises – We’re going to put Farmiga and Maslany in the top spots, mostly because their networks have not really been in this sort of awards-show realm before. However, both are very much deserving of being at the party, and we definitely wish that Farmiga’s co-star Freddie Highmore had a nomination of his own (since we think he’s actually the better out of the two).

The snubs – We’re genuinely very happy with this list, with the only two major omissions we can think of being Elizabeth McGovern of “Downton Abbey” and Kerry Washington of “Scandal.” Both had good years, but this show went a bit more down a niche path.

Who should win – This is a great category this year. We’re ruling out Margulies since half of season 4, even if she had nothing to do with it, wasn’t very good. The rest are people you can make a case for, but if you are looking at sheer talent mixed with the challenge of the material, we are going out on a limb here and giving it to the lesser-known Maslany over some of the flashier choices.

Who will win – We’re going even further out on this said limb and predicting that Maslany is going to pull this off in the biggest stunner of the entire show. Since “Orphan Black” is ending now, it will be fresh in voters’ minds, whereas favorite Claire Danes’ “Homeland” is several months old at this point. She’s still a strong winner, but we think the show would love to have a flashy well-deserved upset.
