‘The Following’ season 2 spoilers: Exec on ‘is Joe Carroll dead?’ mystery

The FollowingIs Joe Carroll really dead? If you’re a fan of “The Following,” odds are that you have asked yourself this question a number of times already, almost as a part of some sort of insane, manic ritual. After all, there is some evidence out there to support that he’s dead, whether it be dental records or DNA found at the scene.

However, the flip side of this is that Joe is a master storyteller, and he made a name for himself off of being continually one step ahead of everyone else. This is why the move to not show his dead body in the finale was very deliberate, since he could have had some sort of secret room under the home with the fire, and it’s possible that he created some evidence either in advance or at the scene.

The most curious reason to believe that Joe could still be out there is because the show’s executive producer is hardly confirming anything one way or the other. Speaking to TVLine, all executive producer Marcos Siega would really divulge is that we are looking at a season coming up that is going to be very different from anything that you have seen to this point:

“We put it all out there in terms of what we’d want the audience to be guessing: Who really died? How do you resolve it? How do you move forward if people die? What I can say about Season 2 is that it’s a very different season, but at the same time it will feel like a continuation of the story. There’s no way to tell the same story again; we can’t have the exact same moments of jeopardy, because then people will get bored and it’s predictable. The brilliance behind the series that Kevin has built is that he’s seen how these steps need to evolve. The thing that’s going to surprise people most, I hope, is that the fans will become as invested in that story as they were in this one — and even more so because now they know these characters and we’ll have to spend less time explaining backstory.”

Season 2 will probably not begin until January of next year, so you can likely expect there to be plenty of sitting around and waiting to see what happens next. Luckily, we’ll be with you ever step of the way.
