‘Glee’ season 4 song spoilers: Chris Colfer takes on a happy Stevie Wonder hit

Chris ColferThere are not many opportunities on “Glee” these days to hear a Kurt Hummel solo, but we have it during Thursday night’s “Wonder-ful” episode with the Stevie Wonder hit “You Are the Sunshine of My Life.” While it is easy to assume right away that this would be some sort of love song towards Blaine (Darren Criss), word on the street is that Chris Colfer’s character actually is singing this as a thank-you to Burt.

Yep, that’s right: Mike O’Malley is going to be returning to this episode as Kurt’s dad for the first time since earlier this season, which is a move brought on largely thanks to the fact that there really has not been too much story for him. However, Kurt will be back in Lima in part to help the New Directions prepare for Regionals, and he will also have some opportunities to see both his dad and Blaine in some capacity. (We’ve already seen the evidence that Blaine wants to propose.)

One of the nice things about this performance is that it does not actually force Colfer to hit any high notes. Instead, it allows him to focus in on a deeper register that we don’t often get a chance to hear very much of. We always appreciate when some of the cast members show a different side, and this is definitely an opportunity for him to do just that.

There are many other songs from “Wonder-ful” to be previewed, so be sure to keep checking back the rest of the week for more!  What do you think about this performance, and where do you think it compares to some of the other Kurt solos over the years?
