Did NBC make the right move keeping ‘Revolution’ on the shelf?
On Monday, we are about to find out the answer to a very key question when it comes to “Revolution”: have people missed the show so much that they will remember to watch on Monday? Anytime that you have a show that takes an extended hiatus, it is always a risk; but then again, it can be a risk that pays off in spades. “The Walking Dead” has mastered the art of airing seasons in halves, and the ratings have been sensational no matter when it comes on. “Lost” was also been effective with it, though it even suffered at times.
Really, the moral of this story is that if your show is good enough, people will watch you no matter when you are on … so let’s just hope the people behind this series have crafted quite a story that keeps people engaged.
When “Revolution” first came on the air last season, it was heavily touted as the next big thing thanks to special effects, big-name producers, and a story that could bring together families. NBC really did a brilliant job of launching a success show that had no major stars, even though it did have Giancarlo Esposito as a villain, and they also utilized the lead-in from “The Voice” perfectly.
While the show had its moments, there were also some problems early on, whether it be methodical pacing, repetitive storytelling, or the female lead in Charlie alternating between whiny and extra-whiny. We want to be excited for the new season, in hopes it will be like the strong midseason finale, but who knows what side of the show will turn up.
There’s no question that the long hiatus could hurt “Revolution,” but can we all agree that NBC did the right thing in delaying it? Remember that if they had opted to air the show in January, it would have lost its lead-in and likely tanked like “Go On” and “The New Normal” did.
