‘The Vampire Diaries’ review: Shockers for Nina Dobrev, Steven R. McQueen

The Vampire Diaries CastDid you see all of this coming on “The Vampire Diaries” Thursday night? There are shockers, and then there are shockers that leave you a weeping pile of tears on the floor.

There are so many stunners to get here, so we may as well dive right in head-first. The biggest event of the night was the revival of Silas, and what came immediately following: seeing Jeremy’s neck get snapped by this mummified beast of a man. Is Steven R. McQueen’s time on the show really done? If so, this would be sad for a number of reasons, whether it be his story arc with Kat Graham’s Bonnie, or the fact that Elena has pretty much lost every single person who was in her life during the pilot over the past four seasons. Sadly, we’re not going to find out the answer here for at least another week.

As for some other departures, Tyler Lockwood took off almost out of nowhere this week to avoid the wrath of Klaus … and this was probably the most upsetting moment of the show ever. After all that Klaus had done to him, it just didn’t feel natural for the character to just take off because he was afraid of what would happen to him. Judging by the tearful goodbye to Caroline, we also are wondering if he is even going to be back this season. (Don’t expect him to be back for at least the immediate future, as Michael Trevino has taken a few departures from the show in years past.)

Finally, who saw the return of Nina Dobrev’s other character? Katherine made a return appearance for the first time and quite a long time, and the circumstances were indeed shocking given her vow to stay away from everyone in Mystic Falls while Klaus is around.
