Since we are probably going to be waiting until early next year in order to see the first official trailer for “Game of Thrones” season 3, we will have to settle at the moment for what we can get; thankfully, what we have here courtesy of a brand-new “commercial” for the show is rather hilarious, as it combines footage from the show’s second season with the atmospheric mood and narration of The CW.
Basically, the entire spot plays out as though we are watching an ad for “The Vampire Diaries” or “90210,” but with a medieval setting, Emila Clarke in the place of Nina Dobrev, and the opening conversation between Ygritte and Jon Snow (which may be the most hilarious part of the whole clip) is eerily reminiscent of a series of conversations between Matt and Rebekah on the supernaturally-charged drama series. As for the talk between Tyrion and Varys … there’s really no comparison necessary at all.
This video was actually created by Entertainment Weekly as a bit of fun to celebrate their year-end issue, but it is one of the more-perfect tribute videos for both a show as well as a network that has a rather distinct style to it. While you could see it as a stab at The CW in a way for it being overly dramatic and reductive of some of its characters, we view this more as an “any publicity is good publicity” sort of situation. This keeps people talking about television, and given that viewership rules the world on the small screen, this is very much a good thing regardless of the subject matter.
