‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 9, episode 5 preview: The Zola crisis (video)

Even though Meredith has been a key player throughout all of “Grey’s Anatomy” season 9 so far, never has she been in the spotlight quite like she is going to be during the episode airing on Thursday night entitled “Beautiful Doom.” There has not been an hour that will show off all of the facets of her life so effectively, and this includes her relationship with daughter Zola, who thus far in the season has been a relatively absent figure.

In the latest sneak peek below from the episode, we really have a much better idea of why Dr. Grey has such a hard time being a doctor and a mom: she’s just so busy all of the time. She had appointed Callie to take care of the child for a while, but she had to promptly return her thanks in part to surgery; then, Meredith has to hand her off to another doctor when an emergency comes up regarding a patient. Why doesn’t she just hire a babysitter at home? That’s a good question, since she does obviously have enough money as a doctor to make it happen. (Then again, this may be why the show was casting a nanny earlier this episode.)

So where is Derek during all of this? Another noble question, and hopefully one that we will find out some sort of answer to by the time the episode airs. As far as we assume, he is off somewhere dealing with the frustration that he knows how to operate, but cannot fully commit to it thanks to the injury sustained in the plane crash that has hindered so much of his natural ability.

Do you think that this episode is in particular going to be a tour de force for Ellen Pompeo?
