‘Bones’ season 8, episode 5 review: Remains … and remaining too long

Monday night marked the return of “Bones” season 8 after far too long of an absence from our TV sets, and it came back in an episode that was sarcastic, witty, weird, and possible more enjoyable than any this season. While the case was easy to read at times, the journey that they went on from disgusting human remains to finding the guilty part was thoroughly enjoyable.

Without giving a blow-by-blow recap of the case, which you know already if you are reading this article, what made it so interesting was that it was part flower child, part Jack the Ripper, and even a little “Dexter.” Plus, it had one of the most incredible murder weapons ever in an apple churner. Somehow, we have a feeling that the victim here did really not like them apples at all.

Away from the actual mystery itself, most of the humor here was courtesy of just watching Booth and Brennan try to be the perfect hosts for Sweets, who was looking for a new place after he and Daisy broke up. This was hardly a revolutionary story, but there is something always entertaining about watching how a character handles dealing with an unwelcome houseguest. It was a little over-the-top just how much Sweets made himself an annoyance, but seeing Booth slowly start to blow a gasket over it more than made up for any minor issues we have. The best part? Based on what Stephen Nathan is saying at the moment, this story may still be far from over.

The best thing about “Bones” season 8, or really any other season before it, is that really no matter your mood going into any episode, you end up leaving entertained. Sometimes, this is what we care about more than something that is going to lead to some intense discussion with your friends about plot points.
