Lucifer star Tom Ellis on his Crisis on Infinite Earths cover-up cameo

Tom Ellis

One of the most delightful parts of the recent Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event was rather simple — getting a chance to see Tom Ellis! The Lucifer Morningstar cameo in the crossover was all sorts of fun, and it was even more delightful given how Ellis did his best to keep it under wraps.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight earlier this year, the actor did basically everything that he could to claim that he was in Vancouver for a friend’s birthday party — and not to take part in the crossover. There were rumors aplenty way back when and he did everything that he could in order to deny it.

So why deny his participation in advance? Speaking to Entertainment Tonight again, the actor made it clear that it was all just a game to surprise as many people as possible:

“So yes, he is in the crossover. When I went to go and shoot the scene, we were talking on set beforehand — myself and Matt Ryan — and we were like, ‘This is so exciting. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could keep this a secret for the fans until they actually see it onscreen that night?’ … Of course, these days that’s not that possible with social media at all. I think there were a few people hanging around the set who noticed that I was there and put stuff out that I was going to be in it, so I kind of was like, ‘I would still really like to surprise some people.’ So that is why.”

We’re sure that there are some people who didn’t buy the whole birthday party excuse (ironically, Ellis was also there for a birthday party), but for others, it may have completely slipped their mind. We’ll be honest here in saying that in the midst of everything else that was going on with the crossover this week, we forgot almost completely about what was happening with a possible Lucifer cameo. Yet, it did also make sense for him to appear given the Oliver storyline, plus also the personal history that could be explored between Lucifer and Constantine.

Remember that Lucifer season 5 will premiere on Netflix in 2020 — there’s no real reason for secrecy there!
