The InBetween canceled at NBC; season 2 not happening

InBetween

Despite an intriguing premise and a solid cast, unfortunately The InBetween was unable to scare up some new episodes over at NBC.

Late Friday, the network confirmed that they are not bringing the supernatural crime drama back for another batch of episodes. This comes after the first season aired this summer and drew numbers that were, clearly, below the network’s expectations. They were at least steady — the series pulled around a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic for most of its run — but NBC may have wanted a show with at least a 0.5 or higher given that some viewers will likely tune out from one summer to the next. That’s the big concern with a show like this: You lose a sizable chunk of your audience since it’s off for so long between seasons.

The InBetween does continue a rather said trajectory for scripted summer network TV shows failing to get a green light for another batch of episodes. This is a fate that befell another NBC series in Reverie this past summer —  The InBetween actually drew more live viewers a week than Reverie, but the latter fared slightly better in the demo. Meanwhile, ABC also canceled Grand Hotel earlier this summer after it found at least a reasonable following for itself. CBS did end up renewing one of its own summer projects in Blood & Treasure, though we would say that it failed to really pull too much in the way of demo viewership by the end of its run.

What we do hope is that, moving forward, Paul Blackthorne, Harriet Dyer, and the rest of this cast have an opportunity to get some other roles that allow them some stability. Meanwhile, it would also be nice for NBC to put a scripted property after America’s Got Talent so that it could have a great lead-in and, in turn, have a reasonable chance to actually succeed. For the time being, we don’t really think that the series is getting that.
