Dancing with the Stars pro Val Chmerkovskiy takes on Kanye West

Well, this is not a back-and-forth that we expected to see going into today — Dancing with the Stars pro Val Chmerkovskiy in one corner and Kanye West in the other. How did this come about?

It all starts courtesy of “Oh God,” which is a song off of the rapper’s new album. In it, he takes a jab at the ABC ballroom competition — almost out of nowhere — within the following lyric:

“That’s why I charge the prices that I charge / I can’t be out here Dancing with the Stars / No, I cannot let my family starve / I go hard, that’s on God.”

The implication to what Kanye is saying here is that being on the show is beneath him, and that the people who appear on it are somewhat short of cash. Is that really the case? Not so much — remember that Robert Herjavec and Mark Cuban, two extremely wealthy people, have committed on the show before already. Also, in quite hilariously, so has Kanye’s own wife Kim Kardashian. Granted, it was a long time ago, well before she was a household name on the level that she is right now, but there is still humor to it. (Here’s a reminder that we’ve also seen Rob Kardashian compete on the show before as well.)

In a post on Instagram, Val had some fun coming back at Kanye, mostly by playing a bit of his song and then showcasing photos of Kim when she was on the show. This is the sort of feud we can get behind, mostly because it’s not really a feud. It’s largely a funny exchange with Val, a guy who clearly enjoys what he does and values the job that he has teaching celebrities how to dance.

Beyond calling out Kanye, this has been an especially eventful past month and a half for Val. His original Dancing with the Stars partner this season in Christie Brinkley suffered a freak injury, and she was replaced soon after with her daughter Sailor Brinkley-Cook. The two were eliminated earlier this week, in the midst of what was deemed the most shocking elimination of the season.

What do you think about Val’s comeback at Kanye?
