American Horror Story: 1984: What do the ratings say about the future?
The truth here is that few shows have had the ratings challenges of a franchise like this. All American Horror Story seasons have had a similar trajectory in that they start big, only to lose more and more viewers along the way. It seems as though 1984 is looking to combat that by having only nine episodes — its shorter order ever.
So far through season 9, the bad news is that we are seeing the lowest ratings yet. 1984 this past week brought in a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is also its lowest number of the season. Nothing when it comes to the franchise’s trends have changed all that much. The show has lost about half of its audience from where it was back at the start of the season.
Now, the question you’re left to wonder is simply this: Is FX concerned about some of these figures at all? In a word, no. Truth is, American Horror Story does really well in DVR ratings year after year, and we have a hard time thinking this year is an exception. Also, the franchise is very popular internationally. Live ratings in general for shows are down across the board — it’s hard to imagine live TV ever having a hit on the level like Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead ever again.

Despite some recent ratings tumbles, our feeling on American Horror Story is that it will still go on however long Ryan Murphy wants it to. The series is already renewed, so at least at the moment you don’t have to worry about that. Instead, you can just keep enjoying the show and talking about it — so long as that happens in mass numbers, we don’t see it going anywhere in the future.
