Saturday Night Live: Donald Trump, Ray Donovan, impeachment opening

SNL

Tonight gave us a chance to see the first Saturday Night Live cold open of the season, and there is all sorts of news that the show could focus on. Yet, there was one story that stood out above the rest, and you probably have a good feeling what that is: The impeachment of Donald Trump. It generated a ton of headlines throughout the week, which made it very clear that it would be a focus.

While we’re sure that SNL could have gone in more creative directions for this sketch, mostly because there were a lot of different repeat appearances from various characters we’ve seen over the years. Think in terms of Jeanine Pirro or Rudy Giuliani. Yet, we did at least get a chance to see a funny cameo from Liev Schreiber as Ray Donovan at the end. This at least made sense comedically, that someone like Trump would think that Ray Donovan was a real person who could fix things. When it was clear that he wasn’t, we ended up seeing Trump want John Wick’s phone number instead.

Nothing about the cold open took comedy to another level; yet, we’re sure that this is precisely what many different fans out there appreciated. It was just what you would expect and since it’s been a long time coming, Baldwin’s version of Trump was probably very much missed.

The major advice that we would give when it comes to SNL cold opens this year is to try and think outside the box. Sure, talk about politics, but also find a way in which to do it that is a little bit creative or interesting. Don’t just touch on the same subject time and time again in a predictable way.
