We know entering Suits season 9 that there were questions aplenty about the status of Meghan Markle. Was there any way at all in order to convince a member of the Royal Family to appear on the series?
Markle’s character of Rachel Zane was, beyond the shadow of a doubt, an essential character on the series for many years. Yet, she did have her story wrapped up in a satisfying way. Per Mike Ross, she is happy and very much busy. They didn’t have to bring her back, and as it turns out, creator Aaron Korsh decided not to put in a request. In a new interview with Deadline, the showrunner did admit that he contemplated asking her to turn in one last appearance as the character:
Now that we already did it, I will tell you. I thought about asking, and I thought about even using audio footage that we have to come up with something, and in the end I didn’t ask, and I just thought, I’m going to respect her new life and not put her in the position of having to ask. We decided not to put her in that position so I never asked.
It’s clear that Markle returning would have been a logistical headache for both the production and the Royal Family — Meghan is also a new mom, and that has to be considered here at the same time. She may have been eager to do it just because she remains friendly with much of the cast and crew, but even with that, there may still have been reasons why it wouldn’t happen.
For now, we have seven great seasons of Suits with Meghan, so those will very much suffice. We’re happy we had her for that long!
For those wondering, Korsh mentions that there were two people he wanted back at some point before the end, only to not have it happen — Abigail Spencer, who he couldn’t find a reason to include story-wise, and also Gina Torres. The latter was simply too busy following the filming of Pearson.
