Chicago Med season 5 spoilers: How is Natalie recovering?

Natalie Manning

Entering Chicago Med season 5, the good news is that Natalie Manning may be able to get through some of what happened at the end of season 4. Yet, at the same time that doesn’t mean that she is out of the woods. There are some problems coming for Torrey DeVitto’s character, and these are the sort that could lead to her having to her focus on things other than her job and her relationship with Will — provided that it could ever get to where it once was.

Speaking via TVLine, executive producer Andrew Schneider notes that Natalie has “a traumatic brain injury, and we will reveal how serious it is in the first episode.” That’s a lot to think about. He also does confirm that Natalie’s future with Will is “on hold” while she deals with some other oh-so-obvious issues in her life, and that Ian Hardin’s character of Phillip is not necessarily out of the picture.

We don’t anticipate that the Natalie storyline is the sort of thing that is going to be tied together either neatly or quickly within the world of this show, mostly given the fact that there’s no real way that it can be. Traumatic brain injuries can linger and, in some cases, can be with you forever. The short-term plotline of the premiere will probably have a thing or two to do with the exits of Colin Donnell and Norma Kuhling, who were both confirmed to be departing at the end of season 4. They’re coming back to wrap things up and then after that, we’ll see where things go. (We feel like it’s a similar situation in that way to what we ended up seeing back following the departure of the Sarah Reese character.)

Ultimately, we’re sure that DeVitto will relish the opportunity to do something different with her character — the writers have always given her an opportunity to explore some different stuff, but finding a lot of variety can be tough sometimes on a show that is fairly procedural in nature.
