Sci-Fi Character Battle: Lucifer, Wynonna Earp, The Orville, The Expanse stars face off
Welcome to the Sci-Fi Character Battle, a new CarterMatt Feature for the month of August! Over the past several years, sci-fi is a genre that has become so diverse and also so fantastic. You’ve got shows about space travel, zombies, time-travel, angels, demons, mermaids, artificial intelligence, and a whole lot more! Within this series, we’re going to do our part to spotlight many of the best characters within the genre … and then ask which ones you like the best.
Ready for round 2 to begin? Well, today we’re kicking it off with characters from Lucifer, The Expanse, The Orville, and Wynonna Earp showing that they’ve got what it takes to make it to the finale. These are characters who combine so much of what viewers love about this genre — imagination, heart, humor, and also an incredible amount of care for those around them. As a result of that, we care for all of them infinitely. Two of the four semifinalists will advance to the final round.
Voting Rules – Voting will remain open until Monday, August 19 at 3:00 p.m. Pacific time; the advancing characters will move forward to the finale, which begins on August 21. Wynonna Earp, Wynonna Earp – We turn to the subject of great Earper support and fascination. Wynonna’s a character who does what needs to be done and then comes back and deals with some of the consequences later. There is an interesting common thread with all four of these shows included here — they’ve faced adversity. That is a challenge that the fan bases have taken on, but it brings everyone closer together.
Ed Mercer, The Orville – It was a narrow victory, but Ed enters round 2 with a slight advantage of Wynonna Earp from the individual battle there. With all of those numbers now completely off the board, it’s everyone’s game once more. The Orville fans have shown already that even if the new season is more than a year away (and on Hulu), they aren’t going anywhere.
Lucifer Morningstar, Lucifer – Is Lucifer set to be the frontrunner for the title this year? It’s easy to hand him this label given the success of Lucifer across many CarterMatt polls, plus a lot of the internet. We do understand the reason for the support — we’re talking about a truly nuanced character who can make you laugh and shatter your heart. He’s so much more than your prototypical devil!
Naomi Nagata, The Expanse – Naomi is entering round 2 as the underdog, making it into this battle with the smallest number of votes so far. Yet, we don’t think you can rule fans of The Expanse or Naomi out in any situation — perseverance is a key tenant for every character on this show as they look out towards their surrounding, ever-more-complicated universe. Naomi is gripping to watch for a reason.
