Animal Kingdom season 4 finale spoilers: Is this Smurf’s undoing?
The title for the episode is “Smurf.” That says a lot in itself. Think back to the premiere episode entitled “Janine.” That was the origin story. Meanwhile, this is the culmination of the story. Everything is being set up this season to make us worried about the character’s future. She’s got cancer in the present and in the past, she is inching closer to being the woman Ellen Barkin plays in Oceanside. This entire season has been in a lot of ways a Smurf season, even if she’s not in every scene. Her fingerprints are everywhere, regardless of if you’re looking at who J is now or what’s happened to Pope over the years. She’s also threatened Deran already when it comes to Adrian’s future after learning about him talking with the police.

In the aftermath of Smurf’s (Ellen Barkin) heist, the Codys have to protect their reputation, while friends and enemies from the past close in. Deran (Jake Weary) realizes there is only one way to keep Adrian (Spencer Treat Clark) safe. Craig (Ben Robson) struggles to adapt to a new pace of life as Pope (Shawn Hatosy) and J’s (Finn Cole) growing tension reaches a boiling point.
Will there be some sort of big-time cliffhanger at the end of the season? This is not a show that necessarily needs one, but remember that there is going to be a fifth season coming on TNT in 2020. The writers knew while they were working on this that it may not be the end of the road and we like to think that they planned things out accordingly.
