Poldark season 5: Is Jack Farthing an early Emmys 2020 contender?

Poldark season 5 episode 2

We’re a good chunk into Poldark season 5 at the moment, and we expected going in that we’d have great performances from Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson. What we weren’t expecting is for Jack Farthing to completely blow us out of the water.

In our mind, Farthing as George Warleggan has already crept into the awards circuit for his performance this season. He’s taken this man, thought of previously as just this jealous, maniacal villain, and turned him into this figure of loss and suffering. Some of that hatred for Ross Poldark may still be there, but he’s dealing now with a literal ghost of the wife he loved — one of the only people he loved. He’s trying to find a touchstone of what makes him a man and is resisting those who question him — almost violently so. He’s also violent towards himself, as evidenced by him nearly throwing himself upon the rocks.

Through season 5, Farthing has done something that felt impossible going into this season — turning George into close to a sympathetic figure.

So what awards shows could Farthing be eligible for? The Emmy nominations for this year have already been announced, but we’d consider him a contender for the 2020 show — even though it’s so far away that it would be a real test for voters to remember his performance. (They would be judging it based on the PBS airings this fall.) He could also be in the running for the Golden Globes later this year, and that could be his best chance since that show tends to love foreign-set productions.

Either way, we recognize that Jack Farthing is a longshot — there are so many series on television these days and with a select few dominating, it means that there are a tiny handful of open slots available for other contenders. We wouldn’t expect anything if you’re a big fan of him and the George storyline this season — but that doesn’t make him any less deserving. This is Jack’s best work on the series to date, and he’s making it so that George’s storyline is one we are drawn to every single time.
