The Affair season 5 teaser: Joanie wants answers on Allison
As you can see within the video below, Anna Paquin’s version of the character is roughly the same sage in the final season’s flash-forwards to how old Allison was at the time in which she died. Because of this, she’s wrestling with a lot of the same demons that those close to her were, whether it be suicide, despair, depression, and not understanding fully the world around her. She wants to be able to carve a different path out for herself, but she is not entirely sure how to do that.
To go along with this, she continues to raise questions about one subject more so than any other: What actually transpired with Allison, and how she actually died. This was a point of contention at the end of season 4, with there being so much attention being given to whether or not Ben was responsible. At the time of the flash-forwards, there are unfortunately no clear answers still. She doesn’t have a good picture as to what exactly went on or the right way to get answers all about it. The only thing that she can do is raise questions.

This is what makes the end of the promo so curious as within that, Joanie does pose the question to someone about how Allison died. Is she speaking to a much-older version of a familiar character; or, is she speaking to a grave?
By the end of the season, maybe there will be some more answers handed down — but that doesn’t mean that everyone is going to be happy with them. We feel like we’ve seen enough of The Affair over the years to know of its bittersweet nature. Maybe you are satisfied with one part of the story, but then the other part ends with a quiet whisper rather than a shout.
