MasterChef season 10 episode 12 preview: Morimoto & king crabs
If you’ve watched cooking competitions with any regularity, you know already just what Morimoto is capable of. You also know that he’s the sort of chef who would make all of the contestants immediately nervous. That’s a big part of what makes his appearance on this upcoming episode so special. You’re going to have a chance to learn a thing or two more about how he prepares crab and, beyond that, the contestants have to do something that legitimately impresses him. That’s not going to be easy.
Just the idea of working with a given protein in Alaskan king crabs is going to be difficult in its own way — it’s the sort of crustacean that we have trouble eating even after it’s cooked! That’s without even talking about trying to properly prepare it. This is also going to be a challenging task for some home cooks from the midwest. While folks on the east or west coast may have some familiarity with crab meat, it’s not something that people in other parts of the world experience on a regular basis. They find themselves facing so much more of a challenge trying to execute something that they have rarely worked with.

The top 13 endure an immunity challenge in which they must break down Alaskan king crabs; the contestants must craft something magical for chef Masaharu Morimoto in under 60 minutes.
While the video below may not offer any answers as to who is going to succeed within their crab quest, it does do a rather great job in terms of setting the overall stakes. This is an intense episode that pushes what the home cooks can do. What we’ve seen them do at the grill was impressive, but that’s also something that more people are familiar with doing in general. Most people who cook meat have at least been around a grill at some point in their lives.
