Let’s start things off here with Ross Poldark himself, who found himself at the start of the episode trying to prove that Ned Despard wasn’t involved in some sort of conspiracy. He had secured his release but, in the aftermath of what he did, there were others who were ready and willing to undermine all of his work at every turn. That meant George being goaded into potentially signing a document claiming that Ross, Dwight, and Ned were all working together in secret against the Crown.

The only thing that seemed to spare this document coming to fruition was some of George’s own insanity. He continues to see Elizabeth at every turn and there are major problems that go along with that. Take, for himself, him deluding Valentine into thinking that his mother is suddenly around.

Meanwhile, Ross seems to find himself hostage of the government in some ways — he has been ordered to spy on Ned and Kitty in order to see what they’ve been up to, at least if he decides to go through with the mission. There are concerns that go along with this but, in the end, he wants to go to Cornwall rather than deal with more of this drama in London. He thinks that he’s safe there but what we’ve come to know over the years is that nowhere is safe in this world.

While Ross was trying to grapple with some problems with Ned, Demelza found herself dealing with some issues back home and also around her family. Take, for example, the romance that Geoffrey Charles is involved in when it comes to Cecily. The issue is Cecily’s father and some of the crises that could come along with the pairing. Ralph is a man out for his own political gain, and that may include marrying Cecily off to George.

For Drake and Morwenna, they continue to build on their relationship. It is clear that she has a ways to go before she is where she wants to be, but we’re getting there. It’s just a slow build and it has to be okay with that.

CarterMatt Verdict

This episode of Poldark tonight delivered one of the more interesting character studies that we’ve seen, with George being at the center of it. It’s a reminder of how much he loves her and also how much he misses her. It’s also probably because he’s had so little support in his life from other people that he cherishes her presence so much.
