Moving into The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 episode 9, we’re going to see the other side of what may be the show’s craziest episode yet. If nothing else, this is one of its most controversial and that’s saying something when it comes to this show.
In the video that CarterMatt has for you below, you can get a sense of the situation with Ofmatthew in the hospital where she will presumably be until the baby is born (provided it does). Ofmatthew is braindead, according to the information that June passes along, and she finds herself stuck there at the order of Aunt Lydia. In the aftermath of some of what we got with Lydia at the end of this week’s episode, we understand her past more than we ever have before. We have a good sense now of why she feels the way that she does. Understanding Lydia is key to understanding the show, but questions remain as to whether we understand this show anymore.
Is June still someone you root for? With the way that she handled things at the end of tonight’s episode, it’s fair to wonder — the look behind the scenes at the episode makes it clear that they want you to be wondering that. They want you to think that perhaps June is just so far down the rabbit hole of darkness and rage that she won’t ever be the same again. She does take to violence in a way that is separate from anything that we’ve seen from her. If she stays this way, the show may stay in chaos.
The end of the promo makes it very clear that June may do whatever it takes in order to get what she wants in this predicament, and that includes coming at Serena.
Here’s the thing on The Handmaid’s Tale — it’s done a lot over the past three years to make us want to trust it as a series. It didn’t get where it is without being quality, so we want to trust where it’s going with June’s entire story arc.
