Animal Kingdom season 4 episode 8 preview: Smurf’s MIA; J’s job

Animal Kingdom season 3

As we approach Animal Kingdom season 4 episode 8, there are already a few different things that we’ve figured out. For starters, Smurf’s out of town and that’s going to present a very different dynamic for the Cody family as they prepare for the next gig — the rock concert.

While Smurf may have helped with some of the early planning, this event is setting up to be J’s big breakthrough as team leader. He’s the one who brought it to the family’s attention because of his work as alter ego Josh and he’s got the resources and the contacts to make things happen. It’s a risky job, as well — because they’re going to operate backstage in the middle of a rock concert, they can’t just wander around in masks. They’re going to have to look like they belong there and navigate these waters in secret. One wrong move, and the whole crew is tipped off and that ruins much of what they were trying to execute in the first place. Discretion is key — it’s going to be the only thing that keeps them from getting arrested it.

The Animal Kingdom season 4 episode 8 synopsis below alludes to all of this further:

The Codys head out for a big job, even though Smurf (Ellen Barkin) is nowhere to be found. All eyes are on J (Finn Cole) as he assumes a leadership position in a risky heist.

What else is coming up?

We wouldn’t be surprised if things between Adrian and Deran take a back seat after the end of tonight’s episode. It looks as though Deran is convincing him to come back home and live with him again, which comes with its own advantages and risks. So long as Pope doesn’t know about Adrian speaking to the police, they may be able to move forward, at least for the time being.

As for Angela and Pope’s relationship, they are closer than ever but that doesn’t change that she may have an endgame of her own. If she’s looking to rob the family, the prime opportunity may lay in front of her in this episode. If Pope’s out on a job and Smurf is MIA, will anyone be watching the house? This could be a real test of whatever her real motivations are for being around.
