Poldark season 5 spoilers: Aidan Turner on Ross, Demelza’s relationship

As we await the premiere of Poldark season 5 in one week’s time, why not discuss the state of Ross and Demelza? These two have long been a foundational couple of the series and most of what we see is going to, one way or another, flow through them. They are the focal point and a driving force … though the two may not always be driving the story forward this season with them in the same exact place.

While there will still be moments of Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson together, a good chunk of Poldark season 5 is going to be featuring the two characters apart. Why is that? It’s much of the same reason as what we saw in season 4. Here is what Turner had to say on the subject in a new interview with the BBC:

“Demelza and Ross are spending less time together, which makes sense for the story and is good because it gives us both different directions to go. Ross goes to London and Demelza takes the driver’s seat in Cornwall – running the mine and trying to find work for people. I have always really enjoyed filming my scenes with Eleanor because she is such a brilliant actress and we get on so well, so it was strange not to film as much together.

“Demelza and Ross are in a good place, they have been through so much together and they have found common ground; both of them are trying to be better people and make it work for their family and they’ve got to a place where for now it works, and there is a sense of contentment or peace in their relationship that they’ve never really had before. They make this pact early on to be good to each other and it is an important one. But I did miss doing as many scenes with Eleanor this year. However, on the very last day it was just myself and Eleanor filming bedroom scenes in Nampara and it was poignant to spend that last day with Eleanor in quite an intimate situation, it made sense.”

Rest assured, there will still be some Romelza moments — you may just have to cherish them when they come because they may prove to be few and far between. They have so much that they’re dealing with now. Not only is the fate of Cornwall in their hands, but you could expand that outward and say that their actions and decisions could end up causing a ripple through a larger part of the country.
