Songland review: Kole’s ‘Hurt Me’ picked by Meghan Trainor!

Songland

Tonight, the latest episode of Songland is bringing you Meghan Trainor goodness, and also hopefully a song that will end up being a hit. What she’s looking for is something that is fun, stylistic, modern, and sassy. She wants something that suits her style, and one that is not just another love song. She liked the one slower, romantic song that was brought in, but didn’t think that it was for her. She narrowed the group of songwriters down to three — so let’s focus on some of them!

Brandin Jay, “No Money Alright” / “We Got Us” – We love the original song, but the truth is that it’s not 100% right for Meghan in its original form. Meghan has money! She doesn’t need to worry about that part of the story. He can make it into something that is cool, different, and refreshing. In the final version, Brandin’s song underwent a title change and a lot of the lyrics were different — but it totally did work.

Kole, “Hurt Me” – This was a really great product from the start. Kole clearly has an understanding as to how to make great pop music and how to appeal to the artist in question. It’s not the most immediately-catchy song of the three, but the substance is great and it feels totally up Meghan’s alley. It’s the song that feels superficially the best for her.

Josh Wood, “Alone” – Josh is a guy who has been on the fringes of success for a while — he’s been close, but just hasn’t made it over the hump. This show was his chance to get there. The final version of the song was dope — pure pop, really current, and extremely catchy from start to finish. Josh sounds a lot like Justin Timberlake, and we almost think that he could be a successful artist with it in his own right.

So which song ended up winning?

We think that this was a tough choice. While Kole’s made the most sense, Brandin’s was so much better on the second go-around and Josh’s had a lot going for it from the get-go.

In the end, though, Meghan chose to do “Hurt Me” — we can’t say that we’re not 100% surprised, mostly because she said during the second performance that Kole reminded her of herself. Typically, when you hear something like that, this is a flare sent off into the sky. This is probably the song that is being chosen.
