‘Game of Thrones’ season 3 spoilers: Filming underway in Morocco

“Game of Thrones” is getting closer and closer to wrapping its filming for season 3, and over the weekend the show really started to dive heavily into what is the next phase of production: filming the hit HBO show in the city of Essaouira, Morocco. It’s a coastal city that is well-known for its sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean, and on this occasion it serves as the setting for what will be a key storyline for one Daenerys Targeryan.

In some set photos that you can see over at Winter is Coming, you can get the sense that the show is looking to create a sort of Mediterranean feel to a place that is going to be important in the story, and we have seen such things as wooden cross-like structures to soldiers adorned in armor that is not likely to burn them to the core to the same extent as what we have seen at King’s Landing.

In the context of the books, it’s clear here to us that this could be one of the cities of Slaver’s Bay that will provide Dany with that much more in the way of resources in order for her to continue her quest to take back the Iron Throne. This has not been an easy journey for her by any means, and one of the primary reasons for that is simply due to her own status as the ultimate sort of underdog. Even though she has a small army, it’s hardly that of what the Lannister or Stark families have obtained back in the Seven Kingdoms.

Filming will continue in Morocco for a chunk of October, and then, production will head to the final city that is on the schedule in Iceland.
