Good Trouble season 2 episode 2 preview: Work versus play

Good Trouble season 2 episode 2 is entitled “Torn,” and the first takeaway that we have upon seeing that is wondering if it’s an homage to the 1995 song. Yet, we’re not sure how many of the show’s target viewers are even old enough to remember that (we are so that’s saying something about us).

Within this episode, it seems like “Torn” is more of a thematic representation for where so many of these characters are at the moment — Mariana is finding herself trying to establish boundaries between her relationship with Raj away from work and then also where things are with him at work. It’s a difficult balance for her to maintain because there are feelings there … but also big problems in the event that her job finds out about what’s going on behind the scenes. She’s in a difficult position and it’s one that is not going to be getting any clearer for her soon.

Meanwhile, for Callie, she’s gotta continue to try to balance things out with both Jamie and Gael … let alone what she’s been doing within the courtroom.

Below, CarterMatt offers up the Good Trouble season 2 episode 2 synopsis with more news when it comes to the show:

Mariana’s new relationship complicates her work environment. Callie is struggling to make decisions that will disrupt both her career and love life. Malika questions her involvement in activism. Davia juggles the men in her life.

We’re more than a season in now, and we have a good sense as to what sort of story Good Trouble is looking to bring every week. This is a show meant to capture Gen Z sentiment and some of what these people are looking for in the world — stability and hope for a brighter future, and then also ambition to keep dreaming and hoping for more. Sometimes, there’s a little too much ambition here and that leads to dreams falling by the wayside — but that’s not going to stop them from continuing to stretch their wings.

In terms of being socially-conscious, you aren’t going to see too many other shows quite like it. We’re going to see a lot of causes explored in season 2 related to identity and fighting for what to believe in … but they can’t quite come at the expense of some of what’s happening with the general plot. It’s always going to be a tricky balancing act between the story and the message; for the writers of Good Trouble, they’re at least experienced at doing them. After all, a number of these folks are holdovers from the days of The Fosters.
