Agents of SHIELD season 6 episode 5 video: What was & what is
As the sneak peek that CarterMatt has for you below reveals, May is going to have some visions of Phil back before his apparent death on a tropical paradise. We know that the two spent time together there prior to what happened, and they were some of the happier moments of her life. When you think about May, it’s easy to envision her as this woman who thrives only in action. Yet, she’s more than just an action heroine and Phil allowed her a chance to show a different side. She misses him, and there is something so simple and yet heartbreaking about that.
This is probably why May is having some of these visions in tonight’s new episode. She’s going to find herself in a position where she is captured by someone who superficially looks just like Phil, and that’s probably going to be a hard thing for her to handle. Sarge is emotionless towards her and doesn’t recognize some of the burden that this situation is causing for her. All he recognizes is that he has an endgame (yep, using that word intentionally) and he is trying to work towards that. Somehow, May is going to help with this. May is envisioning herself with Phil, but then also where she is with Sarge. It’s where she wants to be with a man who looks like him as opposed to where she actually is. This is a challenging, almost-impossible situation for her to try and deal with.
Is there a silver lining? If so, it’s a very small one. It’s basically this notion that Sarge isn’t necessarily out to hurt May. He’s there in order to take out a different threat. He’s not exactly a villain, but that doesn’t always mean that his interests are fully aligned with hers. Whatever he’s doing was unpleasant enough that he needed to drug May so that she wouldn’t act out against him. He recognizes just how dangerous she is and clearly, he’s doing his best to pull a preemptive strike to make sure that nothing happens and there is no actual carnage. He does what he needs to do and then move on.
Be prepared for an emotional Agents of SHIELD tonight. This is, after all, a chance to see a totally different side of May, and a chance to better understand Sarge’s specific mission once and for all.
