Last Man Standing season 8: Could it contend for comedy ratings crown?

Last Man Standing

Last Man Standing season 8 isn’t premiering until early 2020 — if you’ve been following the headlines the past month, you probably know that. It’s going to be moving to Thursday nights following the end of NFL on Thursdays, and Fox seems to be making a big gamble putting it in direct competition with Young Sheldon.

Why do this? Well, for starters, they recognize that they can’t program it on Fridays anymore after that spot was taken by the WWE. Beyond that, this was just the timeslot that made sense thanks to the current network landscape.

No doubt, the move to Thursday night could end up inevitably helping out Last Man Standing in the ratings. While the show may have figured out a way to cultivate an audience for itself on Friday nights thanks to a devoted following, there are probably still a number of people who haven’t been able to check it out due to the timeslot. With the show moving to Thursdays, maybe it can pick some of these viewers up.

Beyond that … is it actually possible for the series to become the #1 comedy on TV in 18-49 demographic? While it may be a longshot, we do think there’s a chance. Think about a few of the reasons why.

1. The Big Bang Theory is gone – Really, that allows for almost every comedy to have a chance to sit upon the throne.

2. How is Young Sheldon going to fare without it? – While on the surface, it seems like it could be able to hold onto its numbers okay, there’s no way to know for sure until new episodes start this fall. Was it lead-in dependent, or will it stand on its own?

3. Some other comedies may slide – The Conners still performed reasonably well last season, but we anticipate a drop as many other shows have in their second season. Meanwhile, Modern Family’s been on the decline for a while.

Ultimately, our thesis goes a little something like this: While a number of other comedies may slide, Last Man Standing is one that actually stands a chance of improving in a new timeslot. If its audience turns out or grows a little bit, it’s going to be in quite the competitive situation, and we’re excited to see how it all turns out.
