The Voice season 18: Should a new coach join Blake Shelton, panel?

Voice season 13 promo

Odds are, you’ve heard the news at this point: Adam Levine is leaving The VoiceHe’s decided to go and with that, NBC had to reverse-course on the original plan and bring in someone new for season 17. Their decision? Gwen Stefani, which makes sense given that she’s familiar already to viewers, has an established rapport with Blake Shelton (obviously), and has a great deal of music credibility.

Of course, for the sake of this article, we’re taking a look ahead to the larger future of the show. In particular, we’re wondering this: Is there going to be a different coach for season 18? Could The Voice bring someone different into the world?

With Gwen, it’s pretty clear that the producers got quite lucky — they were able to find a big-name star and book them on reasonably short notice, as production’s kicking off this summer and Adam was originally supposed to be coming back. Ideally, they would’ve had someone in mind for the summer a little while back. For the upcoming season, they’ll have more time to look at the possibilities and see if someone else is out there.

Whoever comes on for season 18 doesn’t have to replace Gwen — they could really step in for everyone! Ultimately, the #1 thing that this show needs more than anything is someone who can come on board and offer up some new energy. The ratings for The Voice aren’t what they are and given how much this show is about the coaches, the #1 thing that they need is a coach who is popular enough to bring in new viewers.

What are some of the choices? One possibility could be to bring on board someone who is a music icon — think along the lines of what Sir Tom Jones brings onto The Voice UK. A living legend could bring a huge influx of older viewers and attention that the show isn’t getting otherwise. Another possibility, however, would be to bring someone hugely famous in the present — think along the lines of a Jonas Brother or a One Direction member, if you can find a hole in one of their schedules. You’d need someone with a huge following who could drive a ton of viewers to the show within a younger demographic. Big stars often mean issuing a big price tag, but unless The Voice tries, their viewership may be what it is.

Ultimately, we like all of the current panel, but at some point, another shake-up could be required. Here’s to hoping that they get creative and rather innovative moving forward in the years to come.
