Is The Resident new tonight? What to watch out for next

The Resident

Is The Resident new tonight? With the way that the most-recent episode concluded, it only makes some sense to want some answers.

Unfortunately, here is the bad news — this-past episode was the season 2 finale and with that, we’ve reached the end of the road … at least for now. There will certainly be more opportunities to tell stories within the world of The Resident, but you’re going to have to wait for them until the fall.

Earlier today (read our piece over at the link here), it was confirmed that the Matt Czuchry – Emily VanCamp drama will be moved over to Tuesday nights this fall, where it will air as a part of a lineup that also includes Empire at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. This move is being made in order to ensure that 911 will be able to air alongside a new show — basically, think of this as Fox trying to support a new show with a good lead-in. We don’t foresee there being too big of a ratings change coming The Resident’s way because of this — NCIS isn’t the same sort of unstoppable ratings threat that it once was, and the show was airing opposite The Voice already and it knew how to withstand that competition.

So what’s the #1 thing that the series has to do when it does return, most likely in either late September/early October? At the top of the wishlist is obviously learning who is dead — Nic’s sister Jessie or her father Kyle. For the writers, it almost feels like this is a decision between doing the big, dramatic move (killing of Jessie) or the one that will make more viewers happy. We’re much more invested in the sister, but obviously there could be a lot of conflict that comes from Kyle learning that he gave up a kidney, something that he didn’t want to do, only for it to have killed his daughter and almost killed him in the process.

Then, there’s assessing the future of Conrad and Nic itself. These two characters seem to be closer to a commitment than they’ve been as of late, so maybe that will build into something more. Elsewhere, we’re not sure that there are any romances that will be manifesting themselves immediately — especially with Bell learning that Kit is going back to her ex. (That’s a shame, since we were really rutting for the two of them to be together for a while.)
