‘Sons of Anarchy’ season 5: Walton Goggins discusses [spoiler]

Warning: If you have not seen Tuesday night’s new episode of “Sons of Anarchy” just yet, you really should stop reading now before you get any further in this article. Trust us, you’ll be very happy that you did.

While there were a few semi-major events that transpired this week with Tara, Gemma, and Jax, there is still no question in our mind what we’re going to be talking about for some time: seeing Walton Goggins of “Justified” make a cameo appearance as a transgender woman who ends up even sharing a brief, playful kiss with Jax. It was a role that was kept under wraps shockingly until the episode aired, and it made for a great moment for fans of “The Shield,” who both he and Kurt Sutter worked on for many years.

So how did this appearance really even come about? Speaking to TVLine following the episode airing, the actor did his best to explain:

“About a year-and-a-half ago Kurt did an interview about Shield actors appearing on Sons of Anarchy. He said he could never have Michael Chiklis or Walton Goggins on the show because they’re too closely identified with their characters on The Shield. And I read this interview and I sent it to him and I said, ‘This is bulls–t.’ [Laughs] I said, ‘What if I played a transgendered character?’ And literally a year and a half later, Kurt texted me, ‘Remember that conversation we had about you playing a transgendered character? Well, I’ve written something — and I’m not going to do it unless you do it.’ So he sent me the script pages and I fell in love with her.”

Goggins also claimed that his kiss with Jax was not scripted, but he wanted to do something playful that would be an embodiment of who is character Venus really was. Therefore, he told Charlie Hunnam to “trust” him at the moment the scene was being show; and we have to say, it really worked out rather well.

How much fun was it for you to see Goggins stop by this show, especially in the last sort of character you expected him to play?
