NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 episode 21 review: Did Anna escape?

Sam and Callen

Tonight, NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 episode 21 kicked off a two-part arc that was, in part, all about Anna. She was able to escape prison early on in the episode alongside her cellmate, and from there, the team had to figure out if there was a way to actually bring her back in … if there was a way for her to survive.

We’ll be the first to admit that through most of the episode, we were concerned that she wasn’t going to make it out of this alive. That was especially echoed in the closing minutes when Anna made it clear that Sam and Callen wouldn’t move as Anna’s car was barreling down towards her. This was heartbreaking for Callen, as he was put into a position where he had to try and take out a car where someone he cared about was inside.

Of course, right when you think that something was going to go one way on this show, it didn’t. Sam and Callen quickly found themselves mired in a shootout with some surprise visitors, which meant that, in turn, Anna and her cellmate were able to escape.

Here’s the good news — Anna is working some sort of angle here! Nothing is precisely as it seems, and she has an alternate motive for doing what she’s doing. She just wouldn’t tell Callen about it and when he tracked her down at the end of the episode, he couldn’t bring himself to shoot her. Instead, she got away. She was able to escape via a plane and per Rogers at the end of the episode, they are apparently on their way towards Russia. Whether or not she makes it there … well, that’s something that we’ll be able to discuss a little bit more as we inch towards the next new episode. It does seem like she’s got a specific plan and mission in mind, so there’s that.

Finding the humor in anything

The stakes within this episode were obviously super-high but somehow, there were still a few little moments of laughter throughout. We’re going to say that one of the MVPs in here was Arkady, who continues to basically find a way to continue to bring both levity and heart. While he offered some laughs in here, especially with Kensi and Deeks, he also rooted for Anna ’til the bitter end. Arkady may be somewhat of a warped dude, but it was certainly clear after this that he absolutely loves his daughter more than anyone.

CarterMatt Verdict

This was a great episode of NCIS: Los Angeles, at least in terms of introducing a new mystery, one with a number of other questions about what Anna is looking to do moving forward. Per the end of the episode, Anna is trying to go after Volkov for the sake of trying to track down Callen’s father — we’ll just have to see if she’s successful in that.
