Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight? What we’re missing

John Oliver

Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight on HBO? If we were the network, we probably would’ve scheduled this season in a most-bizarre way — basically, doing everything that we could in order to air new episodes every single week following Game of Thrones. It shouldn’t be hard to explain why. If you can even capture 1,000 new viewers off of the strength of the fantasy epic, it seems to be worthwhile. Maybe you can convince some of these people to stick around as opposed to just checking out the show on YouTube, since there are clips from the show that never end up making it online!

Unfortunately, HBO clearly disagrees with our strategy, given that there is no new episode of Last Week Tonight on the air this week. Admittedly, if there was, it would’ve aired rather late at night — blame what’s going on with Game of Thrones (ironically) for that. Its epic Battle of Winterfell episode is going to run for almost 90 minutes including the HBO promotions at the start of it and the end credits. That means that the earliest that Last Week Tonight could have premiered is 11:30 … and that’s forcing you to wait for a long time on a night where many people need to get up in the morning for work or school.

If you want to know why Oliver’s show isn’t weekly, we have a video at the bottom of this article all about it! For some more information on the other side of this, we recommend that you subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube!

On weeks where we don’t end up getting a new episode of the HBO show, one of the things we do really wonder is what content we’re missing out on? What could we have had tonight if there was a new episode on the air? In terms of timely coverage, we wouldn’t have been surprised to see something about Joe Biden after he made his announcement that he is running for President. There’s an added bit of intrigue behind Biden being a focus, given that Oliver recently did a much-publicized interview with Anita Hill and her name has come back into the headlines because of Biden’s role in the confirmation hearings so many years ago.

In general, Oliver hasn’t waded too much into the 2020 election waters, save for talking about some things that have transpired within the Donald Trump Presidency. We feel like that is going to eventually change, but he probably recognizes that there is no hurry given that we have EIGHTEEN MONTHS still to go until the election actually happens. Ugh. That’s what makes things so incredibly difficult when it comes to taking on elections in the first place. We understand that politics are a marathon rather than a sprint, but there’s a difference between a marathon and what we get in American politics, which is so exhausting that come November 2020, we’re all going to want to turn into Rip Van Winkle for some extended period of time.

If you missed it…

Last week we wrote about some of Oliver’s thoughts on the Mueller Report, and you can check some of that out now over at the link here.
