MacGyver season 3 episode 21 preview: Matty’s mission; Riley’s discovery

MacGyver

MacGyver season 3 episode 21 is going to be coming onto CBS next week, and with it being the penultimate episode, clearly there’s an interest among the writers in updating some of the stories for the supporting cast. The finale’s going to be about introducing a new villain, after all (one played by Peter Weller), so it only makes sense to focus in before that on a couple of other threads you’ve seen woven in and out the past few months.

Of those, we’re of course talking about Matty’s ex-husband Ethan and the quest to keep his new family safe (much harder than it seems on the surface), and then also Riley and her relationship with Billy Colton. These two have certainly had their high highs, but with Mama Colton showing up on next week’s episode and with the characters heading to the other side of the Atlantic, there could be some serious surprises coming their way. Maybe these storylines will set the stage for what’s coming for Matty and Riley both moving into a potential season 4. (Is this where we should comment and/or express disappointment that there is no renewal yet? Seems about right.)

To get a few more specifics on what’s coming, check out the official MacGyver season 3 episode 21 synopsis right now:

“Treason + Heartbreak + Gum” – Matty’s ex-husband, Ethan (Brendan Hines), asks her for help when a criminal organization, S-Company, kidnaps his wife and daughter, forcing Matty to decide if she’s willing to commit treason in order to help him save his family. Also, Riley joins Billy Colton (Lance Gross) and Mama Colton (Sheryl Lee Ralph) on a mission to Paris and makes a heartbreaking discovery, on MACGYVER, Friday, May 3 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

What we know that we want for these two characters moving forward is happiness, but in the world of a show like MacGyver, that’s not always easy to come by. For Matty, her #1 priority at the moment is that she continues to be the boss — and also build closer connections to Mac and the rest of the team. We don’t think that it’s a bad thing at all for her to be personally invested in her team members, since she’s the sort of person that will draw even more fire from that. It won’t just make her nervous out in the field.

Meanwhile, for Riley she just has to be wary. Billy Colton’s a guy who has absolutely shown a sweet side, but in the midst of this you can’t just forget that the guy is a part of a family of bounty-hunters. They are going to occasionally walk over the line of what is morally good, and their interests aren’t going to always align with those of the Phoenix Foundation. You gotta store that away and consider that eventually, she could be stuck in the middle.
