Designated Survivor season 3 premiere date official; new recap video

Today, Netflix officially confirmed the Designated Survivor season 3 premiere date. What’s the best part about it? You’re not going to have to wait too long in order to see it and we couldn’t be more excited about that. This is a show that we were shocked was canceled in the first place, because even though it may not have been crushing it in the ratings, this has a huge television icon in Keifer Sutherland and it’s extremely topical right now. Getting picked up by Netflix is going to give this show a much higher ceiling when it comes to story telling (you can get away with a lot more on Netflix) and while the show will have the same heart they do have options to push the envelope further then they ever could before. This excites us greatly!

The official premiere date is Friday, June 7, which coincides perfectly with what Kiefer Sutherland has been apparently telling some people at concerts. This is a day that implants the political show within a lovely little window of the early summer TV season — it’s before a lot of summer shows come on the air, and a couple of weeks after the end of the typical TV season. The perfect time to carve out your own little TV moment in a very packed landscape! There will be viewers around who aren’t still suffering through the burnout that tends to come at the end of the fall/spring run of shows. June has always been our favorite binge watching month and we find with the lack of TV out there that streaming services are stepping up to the plate and giving the viewers what they want… more high quality television.

This premiere date puts the show’s launch 30 days following Lucifer, the other high-profile former network show that Netflix acquired after they were canceled elsewhere. Designated Survivor had a two-season run over at ABC, but Netflix opted to take a chance on it and keep it around for another batch of episodes. Who wouldn’t want to pick up a series with Sutherland in the lead?

To go along with this premiere date, who wants some other goodies courtesy of the streaming provider? Let’s start with the official logline, which gives you a good sense of what Tom Kirkman is going to be struggling with this time around:

The 3rd season of Designated Survivor sees President Kirkman face a political reality…campaigning. What does it take to make a leader? What price will he be willing to pay? This season will explore today’s world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and “fake news.” Democracy, as we know it, will hang in the balance.

Can a good man stay a good man in the cutthroat world of politics? Season 3 will be President Kirkman’s greatest test so far.

Obviously, the timing is impeccable here for Designated Survivor to take on campaigns at the same time that there are plenty of campaigns happening for President within the Democratic party. By the time early June rolls around, some of these campaigns are only going to escalate and flood the headlines. This show’s great challenge will likely be finding a way to actually create drama and intrigue that surpasses what is going on in the real world. Good luck trying to make that happen, but if anyone can it’s going to be Designated Survivor!

Meanwhile, there’s also a video below introduced by Sutherland, one that offers up a good sense of what happened over the first two seasons of the show. This is an opportunity to catch up on the series if you’re behind, or if you just need to remind yourself given that the show has been off the air for almost a year now.

What do you think about the Designated Survivor season 3 premiere date, and is there anything that excites you about the upcoming season in particular? Be sure to share right now in the comments.
