Will Chicago PD season 6 episode 20 offer any Ruzek, Upton update?

Upton

Through most of Chicago PD season 6, the writers have presented a couple in Ruzek and Upton who couldn’t be more divisive for many fans. We know that there are some out there who’ve come to appreciate the pairing, even if they did not do so immediately. Meanwhile, there are also others who still remain the camp of Ruzek and Burgess, or are still hoping for something more for Upton and Halstead. Even though this may be a show about keeping the Chicago streets clean, it somehow has also become a show very much about who you go home to at the end of the long day. That’s why there are ‘ships attached to so many important characters — with maybe Voight being the sole exception, though we’re sure that there are even some that are out there with him as well.

If you missed it, the news broke late last week that Jon Seda is leaving Chicago PD and the role of Antonio Dawson behind. For more insight and discussion, check out the video below, subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more, and be sure you also pay a visit to our full One Chicago playlist.

When episode 20 of the NBC drama (entitled “Sacrifice”) airs next month, the writers have presented us with an opportunity to either continue to push this storyline forward or resolve it outright. That’s been our chief criticism of it for most of the season — either commit to it fully or try to move forward from it. The problem we’ve run into is that Ruzek has felt more committed to its cause than the other way around and unless this dynamic fully changes, it’s hard to see it moving past where it is. Stasis is not good for a TV relationship long-term. There needs to be some element of drive, whether it is driving towards something more or hitting a bump in the road. Given that the finale may have other things to worry about being just show romances, it’s best to get a sense of where things could be going beforehand.

Per the NBC synopsis, here is what Chicago PD season 6 episode 20 is going to provide in terms of its larger story, and also some of what could be causing some strife within the “Upzek” dynamic:

05/08/2019 (10:00PM – 11:00PM) (Wednesday) : A violent crew is hitting pharmaceutical delivery trucks and stealing drugs, but their motivation is more complicated than just money. The case tests Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and Ruzek’s (Patrick John Flueger) relationship.

Will any One Chicago romance last?

It’s admittedly a depressing question given that fundamentally, so few of them have. The most successful one actually comes in part from within Chicago PD, as Platt and Mouch’s cross-show romance remains fully put together. It’s a little bit easier for them, though, given how they are smaller series-regular characters and their relationship is rarely a focus. Unfortunately, you look elsewhere and the picture isn’t pretty. Casey and Dawson on Chicago Fire are over, as are Will and Natalie on Chicago Med. The relationship between Connor and Ava on Chicago Med is especially dark and with Colin Donnell and Norma Kuhling joining Seda out the door, there’s not a lot of hope for anything to improve there.

If Ruzek and Upton don’t find a way to make things work in this crazy world, the attention then shifts to some other One Chicago romances to try to make it happen. Ultimately, our advice in the midst of all of these crises of the heart is simple: Don’t watch these shows for just romance, given that there are so many ways for it to disappoint you. For starters, romantic conflict = constant drama. Beyond that, it’s so hard to lock in any talent permanently for some of these shows given that even with lengthy cast contracts, there are few situations where a producer wants to keep a cast member locked in who’d rather be somewhere else.
