In the wake of tonight’s finale, today marks the right time to ask the following question: What will The Magicians season 5 premiere date be on Syfy? Within this piece, we want to do our best to get to the bottom of this mystery.
Let’s start things off here with a simple reminder that the series is for sure coming back for another season! That’s something that the folks at the network were actually kind enough to announce in advance — that good news first came out a little bit earlier this year, prior to the new season even really getting underway. That was a tremendous vote of confidence on the part of the network, but it also gave the creative team more time than ever to craft whatever the next chapter of the show could be.
Could season 5 end up being the final one? Obviously, it’s not the most pleasant thing in the world to think about, but it does bear a little bit of consideration when you’re looking solely at the numbers. The ratings for season 4 were down around 30% from where they were during season 3 — at least in terms of the live ratings in the 18-49 demographic. In total viewers, the show was down just over 23%. There are some notable drops, but at the same time, Syfy may be inclined to keep it going for a little while longer given that they don’t have too many other marquee shows generating huge ratings at the moment. They’re also in a tough spot with arguably their most-popular show on social media in Wynonna Earp, which is currently facing an uncertain future due to financial matters over at IDW Entertainment.
So, for now, there’s a chance that The Magicians could ride out for at least a couple of seasons longer … though we’re pretty used to Syfy as a network canceling things we really like long before we want to say goodbye to them.
So when will season 5 premiere?
Given the early renewal timeline for season 5, it’s hard to imagine the network just sitting on their hands and not giving you any more installments for a while. Our feeling, at least for the time being, is that you’re going to get new episodes within the first couple of months of 2020. There’s no real need for Syfy to announce a premiere date until at least the fall, but we think that you can at least circle January or February on your calendar now. The most logical start date for The Magicians is simply whenever the network thinks that they can create the largest possible imprint, and also when they can deliver a fairly healthy dose of viewers amidst the sweeping competition. (It’s hard to be a successful show in this modern era; that much is clear.)
