NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 episode 20 review: The greatness of Hetty

Hetty

Tonight, NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 episode 20 found itself shaking things up in a pretty big way. After all, Hetty is back!

“Choke Point” marked the first real chance that we’ve had to see Linda Hunt back in action, doing much of what she actually does best — in other words, offering some dry humor in the midst of some inspirational speeches and meaningful moments. The conversation that she had with Eric early on was stuffed full of laughs, but then we got the one with Nell where she showed concern for her mother and arranged transport for the two to head up to San Francisco together.

Basically, this was a storyline designed with the sole purpose of giving us some waterworks. Hetty’s presence makes everything better and tonight’s new episode proved it.

Then, there was the case itself, which contained a storyline for Sam Hanna that turned quite personal. After a Navy SEAL found himself attacked while working security, he was interested in doing everything within his power for the sake of getting justice. He even made a promise to the man’s wife. One of the things that we’ve come to know about Sam is that when he becomes invested in case, he’s going to do everything that he can to get to the bottom of it.

The trajectory of this episode was basically what you would expect — watching Sam, Callen, Deeks, and Kensi all work together to take out the bad guy, just at slightly different speeds. For Callen, it was about trying to hold Sam back enough to ensure that he didn’t do anything too drastic, while also making sure that justice was assured. They got what they wanted, Sam didn’t go over the ledge, and the team can breathe easy that they stopped something so much worse from happening in downtown Los Angeles. (Also, it was certainly cool to see Fatima have a big role in taking the bad guy down from far — we like her as a character and we hope that there will be some more chances to see her down the line.)

CarterMatt Verdict

Overall, we’d consider NCIS: Los Angeles season 10 episode 20 to be an intense episode with a number of funny moments throughout — including Deeks continuing to struggle to remember the name “Choke Point” in the first place.

The obvious problem that we did have with this episode, though, was wondering to ourselves why we didn’t really get any substantial updates on the subject of Nell and Eric’s future with the team itself. This was such a huge storyline on this past episode of the show and we thought that it was going to be picked up in a substantial way tonight. We got it briefly via Nell’s conversation with Hetty and the closing seconds with Eric, but we still wish there was a little bit more than what we got.
