The Durrells season 4 episode 2 review: The fake boar hunt

The Durrells

Tonight, The Durrells season 4 episode 2 brought you right back to Corfu, and right into ideas of everything from a zoo to Louisa trying to have her inn-of-sorts turn into something. Meanwhile, Margo was getting closer to starting her own dream of having a hair salon … but she drifted far from her family as a means of making that happen.

As we get into some of the specific stories at the heart of this hour, let us begin with Louisa — she’s the woman who wants nothing more than stability for her family and to have a future for herself! Yet, she wants the future to be on her own terms. Basil expressed an interest in her, but that does not change the fact that she still has feelings for Spiros … even though their situation is uncomfortable since he is in so many ways leading her on.

Let’s now talk about a hunt — there was some significant tension tonight between Leslie and Gerry regarding one of their new guests in Colonel Ribbindane. This is man who was very keen on the idea of hosting a hunt, even if not everyone else — most notably Gerry — was altogether cool with this idea. As a matter of fact, Gerry wanted to protest when he heard about Leslie planning an event and using Basil in order to help pretend to be a board. So why did this even happen? Well, let’s just say that Leslie got a little bit desperate after he promised the Colonel boar, only to realize that there weren’t any in the area to be found. In turn, Leslie claimed that he would help Basil get closer to Louisa … and all of this was every bit as ridiculous as you would expect. (The only thing as ridiculous as this was Leslie trying to balance hunting with babysitting Daphne’s baby.)

Eventually, Basil did get the courage up to try to make some sort of big, romantic gesture — a bridge. Why in the world would you make a bridge, especially when there is no matter to put under it? It’s the sheer insanity of this gift that adds to the humor.

The hunt begins!

After Basil’s bridge plan petered out, Leslie than began his terrible hunt — with Daphne’s baby in his arms since he could find no ample babysitter. Somehow, things went from bad to worse here after Gerry showed up to protest the hunt and then, Leslie was found out having Basil hiding in a tree, making boar sounds for the Colonel’s pleasure.

It’s probably a good thing that the boar hunt went up in smoke, mostly because the Colonel’s wartime flashbacks made him a tad dangerous out there. Let’s just say that he’s not going to be asking for a refund after getting a tad too into things out in the field.

The Margo story also eventually came to a head courtesy of Louisa paying a visit to Theo, who took her in while she tried to spread her wings and fly a little bit in Corfu. She was able to make sure that she was okay, and then come back in time to turn down Basil. She also confronted Spiros about the difficulties of their relationship, making it clear that it’s virtually impossible for the two to have a normal relationship, given everything that they’ve gone through the past little while.

CarterMatt Verdict

The Durrells season 4 episode 2 has to be one of the stranger, funnier episodes that we’ve seen — save of course for the moment where it seemed like the Colonel was about to shoot Gerry. (He instead shot his gong.)

For most of the episode, Louisa felt as though there were too many men around — yet, by the end of the episode, she found herself feeling a little bit differently. It’s all about perspective and the people who are around you.
